The Cinephile Film Club of ESG will be screening the French film ‘Elevator to the Gallows’ on 13th April at 6.30 pm, at Maquinez Palace theatre, ESG.

Film: Elevator to the Gallows (Ascenseur pour l’échafaud), French with English subtitles
Directed by: Louis Malle

Duration: 91 minutes

Director Louis Malle was just 26 years old when he made a smashing debut with this film which went on to become a cult classic. Even though it was his first film, he convinced the legendary Miles Davis to score the music score and the overall impact was nothing short of groundbreaking.

Adapted from the novel by Noel Calif, Elevator to the Gallows is about Florence (Jeanne Moreau) and Julien (Maurice Ronet) who works for her husband. The two lovers plot a crime but it goes awry when Julien gets caught in a situation. Apart from Malle’s direction and the music score by Davis which was totally improvised, the actress Jeanne Moreau also received praise for her performance. It is also one of those noir masterpieces that capture the beauty of Paris in all its glory and marked the beginning of an illustrious career for Louis Malle.
