Film: The Bride Wore Black (French with English subtitles, 1968)

Directed by: François Truffaut

Duration: 1hr 46 mins

Long before Quentin Tarantino made Kill Bill, Truffaut directed a film with a very similar storyline (Tarantino said he never saw this film but even some of the scenes are uncanny). The Bride Wore Black itself was a wonderful tribute to Alfred Hitchcock, whom Truffaut admired greatly.

Based on a book by Cornell Woolrich (Hitchcock’s Rear Window was also based on his book) Jeanne Moreau (Ebert called her, “one of the screen’s great actresses,”), plays a woman seeking vendetta. it has a rousing score by Bernand Hermann and the costumes were designed by Pierre Cardin – “In this color film, she wears only black and white; her clothes represent her absolutism – the purity of her motives, the darkness of her deeds”, said Annette Insdorf in her book on Truffaut.
