Greetings from the Cinephile Club..! This Thursday, 2nd February at 6.30 pm, The Cinephile Film Club will be screening the French film, Wages of Fear (Le Salaire de la Peur), one of the greatest thrillers ever made – Christopher Nolan called it “A masterpiece of suspense” and it served as an inspiration for his own film, Dunkirk.  The details are as given below.

Film: Wages of Fear (Le Salaire de la Peur, 1953, French with English subtitles)Cast: Yves Montand, Charles Vanel Directed by: Henri-Georges ClouzotDuration: 2hrs 11 mins

This film won the rare double of a Golden Bear at Berlin and the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1953 but when it was first released in America, some scenes were cut because it showed the exploitation of locals in South America, by a corporation. This tense film revolves around four truck drivers who are on a mission to deliver nitroglycerine, which is extremely explosive.
Their job is to carry the material through treacherous mountains to an oil well that’s on fire.  With a rating of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, the consensus reads, “An existential suspense classic, The Wages of Fear blends nonstop suspense with biting satire; its influence is still being felt on today’s thrillers”
