Film: La Ceremonie (French with English subtitles)
Directed by: Claude Chabrol
Duration: 1 hr 50 mins

Director Claude Chabrol, who was a part of the  French New Wave, made 50 odd films during his illustrious career and most of them were thrillers but in a different mould, his films would objectively observe the characters and their actions. Chabrol acknowledged the influence of Hitchcock on his films but was equally inspired by greats like Murnau, Lubitsch and Lang.

Adapted from the novel A Judgement in Stone by Ruth Rendell, La Ceremonie, is about a young woman who is hired as a maid in a rather big and isolated mansion by a rich family. She befriends the local postmistress Jeanne (Isabelle Huppert) and both have something in common, as far as their past in concerned. With some twists and turns, it leads to some unpredictable events, also making it a study of human behavior. Both Sandrine Bonnaire and Isabelle Huppert won the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival that year.
