This thursday 16th May 2019 at 6.30 pm, Sachin Chatte will host the screening of Blood Simple, the debut film of Joel and Ethan Coen. Made in 1984, this gem of a thriller paved the way for bigger things for the Coen brothers, as we know them now. The details of the film are as follows
Film: Blood Simple (English, 1984)
Cast: John Getz, Frances McDormand, M. Emmett Walsh
Directed by: Joel and Ethan Coen
Long before they made Fargo, Burn After Reading, No Country For Old Men, The Big Lebowski, The Coen brothers made a smashing debut with Blood Simple which was also the first film for actress Frances McDormand who went on to marry Joel Coen and now has two Oscars and two Emmy awards to her credit.
This story with a lot of unexpected twists and turns and situations involves a husband (Dan Hedaya) who hires a detective (M. Emmett Walsh) to kill his cheating wife and her lover. But nothing goes according to plan. The New York Post in an apt review of this film said, ‘It’s like watching Alfred Hitchcock try to solve a Rubik’s cube in a roadside diner.’ Unlike what the title suggests, there isn’t a lot of blood or gore in the film – in fact, this is the work of geniuses when it comes to the screenplay.
