Film: Angst essen Seele auf (Ali: Fear eats the soul, German with English subtitles)
Directed by: Rainer Werner Fassbinder
Duration: 93 mins
During his short but illustrious career, Rainer Werner Fassbinder made about 40 odd films in just 14 years. There was a time when more than one Fassbinder film was playing at major festivals around the world. What is equally significant is that he died at the age of 37 – but he left an indelible mark in the world of cinema. Not just that, he also directed two television series and wrote 24 plays during that time.
Angst essen Seele auf (Ali: Fear eats the soul) is considered to be one of his best films – made in 1974, it won the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival. This remarkable story is about a 60-year-old woman and a 35 something-year-old Moroccan immigrant. Even though they come from different backgrounds, a romance develops between them and they marry, much to the chagrin of the people around them. A telling tale on human nature and society, this is a simple yet powerful and profound film.
