Before he won 2 Oscars for direction (The Revenant, Birdman) and 4 in all (including screenplay), Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu had a smashing debut with Amores Perros (2000) and made a mark for himself in world cinema. The film won the BAFTA for Best foreign film and was nominated for the Oscars as well as the Golden Globes.
It was the first film in the trilogy, followed by 21 Grams (2003) and Babel (2006). The common factor in the three films is how different stories come together and are linked at a central point. Set in Mexico City, the three central characters are a hitman, a dogfighter and a model – dogs are common to each of them. Winner of more than 50 awards around the world, Amores Perros also won 3 at the Cannes film festival.
