Girish Kasaravalli’s National Film Festival, 18th August 2017

The Entertainment Society of Goa is organising a Girish Kasaravalli’s National Award winning Film Festival from Friday 18th to Sunday 20th August 2017 at Maquinez Palace, Auditorium 1.

The function will be inaugurated on 18th August 2017  at 6.30 pm in the hands of  Girish Kasaravalli. He will be felicitated by the Entertainment Society of Goa and Goa Kannad Samaj. He will also be present throughout the festival to interact with the audience after every movie screening.

During these three days of the film festival, Girish Kasarvalli’s four films which have won National Award will be screened as follows

18th August ’17, Friday (6.30 PM) – Ghatashraddha (English: The Ritual)

19th August ’17, Saturday (6.30 PM) – Dweepa

20th August ’17, Sunday (11 AM) – Hasina

20th August ’17, Sunday (6.30 PM) – Gulabi Talkies

All movies are with English sub titles.

This festival is open to Cinephile Film Club members and general public. Seating will be strictly on first come first serve basis.

Also the AWARD WINNING CEREMONY of 8th Goa State Film Festival(2014-2015), Marathi feature film category will be held tomorrow at 6.30 pm. The awards were declared for twelve categories, out of which the film Guru Pournima got nine awards while Prem at First Sight won three awards.

Movie: Ghatashraddha (English: The Ritual)

Duration: 2 hrs 24 mins.

Time: 6.30 PM

Synopsis: Ghatashraddha is based on a novella by eminent Kannada writer U. R. Ananthamurthy. A young Brahmin Vedic school student, who is from an aristocratic family, befriends his school master’s daughter who is a pregnant widow. The boy tries but fails in concealing his friend’s pregnancy. The widow has an abortion forced on her, has the eponymous ritual performed on her and is excommunicated. The student returns home as his school shuts down.

Movie: Dweepa (2002)

Duration: 2 hrs 14 mins.

Synopsis: Nagi is the pillar in her small family that includes her husband and her rigid father-in-law, who is deeply rooted to his land. Facing losing her home and a jealous husband, she proves her strength.

Movie: Hasina (2004)

Duration: 1 hr 30 mins

Time: 11 AM

Synopsis: Hasina who marries auto driver Yakub against his mother’s wishes. The couple have three daughters the visually impaired Munni, Shubby and Habeeb. Pregnant with their fourth child, the couple break social codes and do a pregnancy scan to ascertain the baby’s gender. When Yakub realises it is yet another girl, he becomes at turns abusive and neglectful, eventually leaving Hasina to fend for herself.

Movie: Gulabi Talkies (2008)

Synopsis: Gulabi, a midwife in a fishing village in Karnataka, leads a lonely life as her husband has left her. However, when she is gifted a colour television, villagers begin to gather in her house.
