On 9th August (Thursday) at 6.30 p.m. we will be screening one of the all time great comedies, To Be Or Not To Be at the Cinephile Film Club, Panjim.
Film: To Be Or Not To Be
Cast: Jack Benny, Carolyn Lombard
Directed by: Ernst Lubitsch
Duration: 1 hr 39 mins
In 2015, the celebrated thinker and film analyst, Slavoj Žižek named To Be Or Not To Be as his favourite comedy film and said, “It is madness, you cannot do a better comedy I think”.
Director Ernst Lubitsch made this film back in 1942 and even 75 odd years later, the standards of comedy haven’t really been surpassed.
The great Jack Benny and Caroline Lombard play a couple – they are the Tura’s and both are actors performing with a theatre troupe. He fancies himself as the perfect Hamlet and that is where the film borrows the title from. The troupe has to use their acting and disguise skills to stop a German spy in his tracks, resulting in some hilarious situations. Right from the word go, this one is a laugh riot with several memorable lines and it also remains one of the gutsiest films made. Benny, Lombard and Lubitsch all had highly successful careers and this film remains at the pinnacle.
