Before the European Film Festival begins on the 19th Aug. (click here for the details), it is time for an oriental masterpiece. Directed by Ozu, one of the greatest film makers of all time, the script for this film was written well before he actually shot the film – the project was shelved in 1940 due to military censorship and was resurrected a decade later. The story revolves around a middle-aged and childless couple in Tokyo who are going through the motions of marriage.
While he is a simpleton, she is looking for a more exciting lifestyle. The arrival of their much loved niece who is of marriageable age, changes their lives. Although the film was not among Ozu’s favorites, it is has been highly appreciated over the years for its humour, touching story, remarkable characters and study of relationships.
